, on the 17th of this month. so the yearly obama trip to hawaii is set to start a week from next monday. you feel me here? see where i'm going? the window closing faster than folks think. what are our decisionmakers doing right now? among other things they are apparently sending signals through the media. republicans saying time to get moving. the president saying there is a deal to be had fairly quickly if the republicans come around to raising taxes on the wealthy. let me give you the president first. >> -- good faith offer to avert the fiscal crisis, and that offer included significant spending cuts and reforms, and it included additional revenue. and frankly it was the balanced approach that the president has been asking for. now we need a response from the white house. we can't sit here and negotiate with ourselves. our targets and framework are things that we can all agree on. and it is exactly how we approached our discussions in the biden group, my discussions at the white house a year and a half ago and for that matter, in the joint select committee. and if the president doesn't agr

reach parts of the united states, alaska, u.s. military bases in hawaii. but a u.s. efficiently i spoke with who used to work on north north korea for the defense department told me, there are still areas in which north korea has not made it as far as they would need to in terms of getting an accurate rocket, in terms of getting heat shielding, and in terms of making a nuclear war head signal enough to fit on the end of that missile. but the real danger is what it may do with this technology in terms of giving it over to other nations. >> chris lawrence, thank you. >>> john berman with other stories making news. >>> the united states officially recognizing syria's opposition coalition as the representative of the syrian people. it's just a show of support. it is does not mean america will arm rebel forces. president obama talked about why the decision was made right now. >> the syrian opposition coalition is now inclusive enough. reflective and representative enough of the syrian population, that we consider them the legitimate representative of the syrian people in the asass regime. >>

for them. this is the type of rocket that has the range to hit areas in alaska or u.s. bases in hawaii. so there is, you know, some concern over this success by north korea, don. >> so chris, how worried are pentagon officials again about the successful launch? you said there is some success with this but how worried are they about it? >> there are still some ways to go, don. they're worried down the road about north korea marrying its nuclear weapons with this missile technology. in other words, being able to miniaturize a nuclear weapon to put on a warhead, to also be able to aim that missile accurately and to have the type of heat shield that would allow it to come back into the atmosphere without burning up. there's no indication north korea, you know, has made that jump yet. that is a concern down the road, and there's also a concern about what help they may be getting. u.s. official is telling us that one working assumption is that iran helped north korea with this launch. we know in the past u.s. officials have detected north korean engineer going to iran, iranian scientists coming

that he was telling people in a he had inherited a bunch of money and planning to move to hawaii. apparently that's not grounded in any truth whatsoever. but you talk to all the people who knew him and they say this just doesn't sound like jacob roberts. and so at this point, it's just a real mystery. we're also getting more details in terms of the chronology in terms of how it occurred. we're told roberts entered the second floor of the macy's store, started firing actually in the food court area. and then within a minute, within one minute, police swarmed to the scene and when roberts felt like he was cornered, he went to the first floor, that and he where he shot himself. meantime, we're also hearing from someis of his friends. listen to someone who knew roberts from high school. >> he was a counseling aid with us. kids would sometimes be assigned to be our assistant and he helped us with some of the work in the counseling office. i found him to be a very polite young man, soft spoken, nice smile. and just really surprised that somebody with his personality would end up doing
